Konami Digital Entertainment, the Japanese video game giant behind franchises such as Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Castlevania, announced on Thursday the launch of an NFT platform called Resella on the Avalanche blockchain.
The platform aims to make it easier for companies to integrate blockchain technology and issue NFTs, both in games and in other types of applications. According to Konami, Resella eliminates the need for users to open an external crypto wallet or handle crypto-currencies.
The company touted Resella's "market-friendly user experience" in a press release, saying the platform will allow transactions in Japanese yen for domestic users, with plans to welcome global users. Powered by Avalanche technology, Resella will not charge gas fees for transactions.
"By democratising access to Web3-related technologies, Konami Digital Entertainment aims to foster an inclusive environment where businesses from diverse sectors can harness the potential of blockchain innovation," the statement said.
Konami envisages that Resella will enable a variety of digital experiences, such as using NFT in-game as tickets to events or to unlock exclusive content on different platforms. Resella will be built on an Avalanche subnet, or dedicated instance of the network, offering Konami additional customisation features and other potential advantages over the main network.
Several other major games publishers are also investing in the blockchain space. Ubisoft, the creator of Assassin's Creed, will publish its first original game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles on the Oasys blockchain this year, and has launched other projects and collaborated with various blockchains in recent years.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy creator Square Enix launched an Ethereum-based narrative game called Symbiogenesis in late 2023 and has pursued other efforts in the industry. In addition, Sega has brought some of its properties into Web3 via collaborations.
