While the community has been eagerly awaiting this feature, Ledger made a major announcement this week: its Nano X hardware wallets are now compatible with the MetaMask mobile application. This article explores the details and implications of this new feature.
Users have long benefited from the compatibility of Ledger hardware wallets with the MetaMask web browser extension. However, this integration was missing from the mobile version of the application. Ledger closed this gap on Thursday, marking an important milestone in the mobile use of MetaMask. Carl Anderson, vice president of engineering at Ledger, expressed his excitement: "MetaMask and Ledger are autoguard maxis. So it made sense for us to partner and offer Web3 users a great mix of fluid experience and top-notch security."
The announcement made in July 2022 raised a lot of expectations, and it will have taken almost two years for this feature to become a reality. For the time being, only the Ledger Nano X benefits from this compatibility with MetaMask, thanks to its Bluetooth functionality. Users of Ledger's other hardware wallet ranges will have to wait a little longer for similar support.
Using a hardware wallet significantly increases the security of digital assets. Unlike a private key stored on a mobile device or computer, which is vulnerable to malware attacks, a hardware wallet requires physical validation for any transaction. This level of security is now available for mobile transactions, protecting users against cryptocurrency theft.
Both companies have worked hard to enhance the user experience. Ledger integrated Coinbase Pay functionality into its Ledger Live app in February, enabling the purchase of cryptocurrencies directly from the app. MetaMask, meanwhile, recently announced a partnership with Revolut, demonstrating its commitment to improving and securing users' interactions with the world of cryptocurrencies.
